FlightDesk offers real-time streaming charts with a multitude of aesthetic and technical customization options. Powerful features such as technical indicators and oscillators, cross-currency charting, or overlay comparisons and ratio symbols can be applied to the chart. To learn how to add a symbol to a chart, view Symbol Entry.

Customize Chart

There are several methods to customize the chart:

Place Trade or Set Alert from Chart

The Buy, Sell and Alert action buttons appear on the top-right of the Chart component.

Click any button and plot the action line at a specific price-point.  If the Buy/Sell action was selected, a free-flowing Order Entry component will be displayed with the corresponding order type, symbol and limit price pre-filled.  The invoked Order Entry component functions like a pop-up and must be closed in order to access the workspace and other components.  If the Alert action was selected, a standard Alert pop-up will be displayed with the symbol and price pre-filled.

Positions, Open Orders and Alerts Overlay

Enable feature under the Event Markers section on the spacebar menu and any positions, open orders and/or alerts matching the same symbol will be plotted as a line with the corresponding cost or limit price.  If there are multiple positions or open orders in different accounts, each account will be plotted separately.

Chart Comparison

Up to 4 symbols can be compared on a single chart at once. Multiple symbols can be entered in the following methods:

The chart will default to display a Percentage scale when multiple symbols are charted, and it will default to display in the currency of the base symbol.  Cycle through which security is displayed as the base symbol by double-clicking the symbols at the top of the chart.

When multiple symbols are charted, remove a highlighted symbol from the chart by selecting Remove Selected Symbol from the Chart menu. To highlight a symbol, click the charted line or the symbol name at the top of the chart. Alternatively, remove a highlighted symbol by pressing Delete on the keyboard.

Cross-Currency Chart

FlightDesk allows all securities to be plotted in Canadian or US currency using historical daily foreign exchange rates. This feature is extremely useful to view returns net of currency fluctuations.  For example, a Canadian investor can view the true return of a US security by plotting it in Canadian currency.

To change the currency of the display, access the Currency drop-down menu from the Chart toolbar or the Chart menu.

Ratio Symbols

Enter two symbols separated by a division operator "/" to chart a ratio of the datasets belonging to the two instruments (eg. ABC/XYZ).  This allows comparing how one instrument has performed with respect to another instrument.  For any two points along the time axis (P1 and P2), if P2 is higher than P1 (ie. uptrend), it means security ABC is outperforming security XYZ and if P1 is higher than P2 (ie. downtrend), it means security XYZ is outperforming ABC.  The two instruments may be both equities, or equity to an index or a currency, or index to an index.

For example, "IBM/.DJI" shows the performance of IBM relative to the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Custom Chart Templates

Like most components, custom templates can be created and saved within a Chart component. Saving a chart template will save any indicators and any aesthetic features that have been applied. This includes Chart Type, Scale, Indicators, indicator customizations, colour scheme, etc. Features that are symbol specific, such as a Benchmark or Currency, will not be saved in a template.

To save a newly created template, select Save Template As from the Chart menu (all currently customized features will be saved in this template). To save changes to an existing template, choose Save Template from the Chart menu.

To Rename, Delete, or choose a template to Set As Default select Manage Templates from the Chart menu.
